Equatorial Guinea’s President, Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, has appointed Zenón Obiang Obiang Avomo as the new Director General of the National Agency for Financial Investigation (ANIF), following the dismissal of Baltasar Ebang Engonga due to a scandal involving explicit videos and allegations of misconduct.
Local media outlets, including Ahora EG and Real Equatorial Guinea, reported that Engonga was fired based on Decree 118/2024, citing “irregularities committed in the exercise of his functions” and “inappropriate family and social conduct.”
Authorities discovered over 400 explicit videos featuring Engonga and the wives of prominent officials during an investigation into alleged financial misconduct. The footage, which reportedly included the wives of ministers, police officers, and the President’s sister, was found during an impromptu search by ANIF officials and later leaked online, sparking public outrage.
In response, the government has implemented strict measures to prevent similar ethical violations, including the installation of surveillance cameras in government offices and the suspension of officials involved in misconduct. This leadership change aims to restore integrity within Equatorial Guinea’s public service.
Zenón Obiang Obiang Avomo, a seasoned official with a law degree from the National University of Equatorial Guinea, brings extensive experience from roles in finance, judiciary, and energy sectors. His appointment marks a significant step in reforming the nation’s anti-corruption efforts.
