Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has explained why his team drew 1-1 with Twente at Old Trafford on September 25. He blamed the failure to score a second goal after taking the lead in the first half.
Christian Eriksen put United ahead with a powerful strike. However, the team could not capitalize on further scoring chances. Ten Hag stated in an interview with TNT Sports that consistency and pressure are crucial when leading 1-0. He noted that failing to extend their lead allowed Twente to come back into the match.
In the second half, United’s performance declined, leading to Twente’s equalizer and a surge in their confidence.
“We kept them alive,” Ten Hag said. “At 1-0, you must control the game and keep going. In the second half, we dropped the level and conceded a goal. We didn’t finish it off; we needed that second goal, which kept them in the game. We were punished for our mistake.”
Manchester United will next face Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League on September 29. Following that, they will play Porto in the Europa League on October 3 in Portugal.
