Givemesport, a British publication, has disclosed that Everton’s precarious financial circumstances played a pivotal role in the English Premier League club’s decision to part ways with Nigerian international Alex Iwobi during the recent summer transfer window.
The midfielder embarked on an unexpected journey from Everton to Fulham, signing a lucrative five-year contract valued at €22 million.
Over the course of four seasons with Everton, Iwobi made a notable impact, featuring in 123 Premier League matches and scoring six goals. He earned accolades such as Players’ Player of The Season and consistently stood out as one of the top performers for Everton, aiding them in narrowly avoiding relegation for two consecutive seasons.
Nevertheless, his transfer to Fulham left fans stunned on the closing day of the transfer window.
In a publication released on Tuesday, Givemesport emphasized that Everton is currently grappling with a dire financial situation both on and off the field, necessitating a significant change at the helm of Goodison Park.
The financial struggles of the Merseyside club were exacerbated this summer, with only £2.6 million spent on upfront payments for new players, while assets worth £45 million were offloaded, including the pivotal figure of Alex Iwobi on the deadline day.
