Proper nutrition is crucial for both maternal and fetal health, experts have stressed. At a recent Media Roundtable hosted by FHI 360 in Lagos, the focus was on the importance of multiple micronutrient supplements (MMS) for pregnant women in Nigeria.
Olawumi Ajayi, Lagos State Coordinator for FHI 360/Alive & Thrive, explained that while macronutrients like carbohydrates are needed in larger amounts, micronutrients such as iron and folate are vital in smaller quantities for fetal development. She noted that iron deficiency is common among pregnant women in Nigeria, underscoring the need for effective supplementation.
