The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, has reassured residents of the FCT that their safety is a top priority, emphasizing that the government is actively working to support security agencies with all necessary resources to address the rising insecurity in the territory. Wike made these remarks during an emergency security meeting held on Tuesday, responding to the recent spate of kidnappings in the FCT.
The meeting was attended by heads of security agencies in the FCT, officials of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), Area Council chairmen, and traditional rulers. Wike urged the Area Council chairmen to fulfill their responsibilities at the local level, emphasizing the need for security forces to re-strategize and intensify efforts to address security challenges.
Wike assured residents that the government is taking every step to resolve the security challenges in the FCT, particularly in areas like Bwari that have experienced security issues. He emphasized that there is no need for panic, and the government is committed to providing the necessary support to security agencies to alleviate citizens’ fears.
Expressing concern over reports of Area Council chairmen abdicating responsibilities and traveling out during security challenges, Wike stated that such actions would not be tolerated. He called for the cooperation and vigilance of all stakeholders in addressing the security issues in the FCT.
The emergency security meeting was prompted by the deteriorating security situation in the FCT, marked by incidents of gunmen invading communities, breaking into homes, and kidnapping residents. The recent incidents, including the murder of Nabeeha Al-Kadriyar and the demand for a high ransom for kidnapped victims, have heightened tension and raised concerns among FCT residents.
