In a recent statement, the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) announced that the Federal Government has expanded the deployment of mini-grids in rural communities to improve power supply and alleviate the impact of the subsidy removal on petrol. The mini-grids will be implemented to provide uninterrupted electricity in the communities where they are installed.
During an inspection of the 200KWp Solar Hybrid Mini-Grid in Danchitagi Community, Niger State, the Managing Director of REA, Ahmed Salihijo, highlighted the benefits of the facility. He emphasized that these mini-grids would reduce the amount of petrol purchased by the community members, thereby contributing to cost savings and promoting sustainability.
Salihijo further explained that the Nigeria Electrification Project-Performance Based Grant initiative has successfully deployed more than 80 similar mini-grids nationwide, ensuring fair and equal access to electricity for communities across the country.Salihijo highlighted the significance of the 200KWp mini-grid in Danchitagi Community, emphasizing its role in providing continuous electricity to the approximately 2,670 residents, who are mainly farmers.
He further explained that out of the 534 electricity consumers benefiting from the mini-grid, 13 individuals utilize the power for various services such as tailoring, welding, refrigeration, rice milling, and other agricultural activities.
Salihijo expressed that based on the feedback received, the mini-grid offers an alternative to relying heavily on petrol generators. Its implementation will result in reduced dependence on petrol for power generation in the community.Salihijo emphasized that the implementation of the mini-grid in Danchitagi Community could serve as a palliative measure to help the residents mitigate the impact of the subsidy removal. By providing uninterrupted electricity through the mini-grid, the community members will have access to a reliable and cost-effective power source, reducing their reliance on petrol and its associated expenses. This initiative aims to alleviate the potential challenges faced by the community due to the removal of the subsidy on petrol.
