The G-60, a group of federal lawmakers, has criticized the Rivers State House of Assembly for allegedly overstepping its bounds in amending the State Public Procurement law. The legislators argue that the assembly lacks the legitimacy to amend the law and describe the move as “legislative madness” and “rascality.”
In a statement issued by their spokesperson, Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, the group accuses the Rivers lawmakers of being impostors and clowns, operating from Abuja and Emohua. They claim that these lawmakers are only able to continue their activities due to Governor Siminialayi Fubara’s compliance with a peace accord brokered by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The G-60 alleges that Governor Fubara has upheld the peace accord while his predecessor, Chief Nyesom Wike, has not. They assert that the purported veto of the Rivers procurement law is evidence of Wike’s influence and an attempt to undermine Fubara’s infrastructure initiatives.
Furthermore, the group criticizes the content of the amended procurement law, particularly the provision limiting mobilization fees to not more than 20% of the contract sum. They argue that such a restriction is impractical given the current economic challenges.
The G-60 also points out that the lawmakers who defected from the PDP to the APC have violated constitutional provisions and should vacate their seats. They call on INEC to conduct elections to fill the vacant seats and put an end to the perceived illegality.
Overall, the G-60 condemns the actions of the Rivers State House of Assembly and urges relevant authorities to intervene to restore order and legality in the state’s legislative process.
