The Federal Government, represented by Minister of Defence Mohammed Badaru, has reaffirmed its commitment to resolving the ongoing farmer-herder clashes in Plateau State. Speaking in Jos during a meeting with community leaders, traditional rulers, and security agencies on Sunday, Badaru expressed deep concern over the violence that continues to plague the region despite previous efforts to address it.
Held at the 3 Division headquarters in Bassa Local Government Area, the meeting aimed to engage key stakeholders and discuss strategies to mitigate recent attacks and reprisals in Barkin Ladi and Riyom LGAs, which have led to significant loss of life and property.
Badaru emphasized the dangers of partitioning communities along ethnic or religious lines, stating that such actions would only exacerbate tensions. He stressed the need for harmonious coexistence among farmers and herders, highlighting their interdependence for socio-economic development.
In his remarks, he pledged to deploy all necessary resources to enhance the safety and security of citizens in the state. He also acknowledged the efforts of security personnel and conveyed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s appreciation for their dedication.
“My presence here today is to fulfill my mandate as Minister of Defence, responsible for protecting our national territory from both external and internal threats,” he stated. He expressed disappointment over the persistent attacks, particularly in Jol and Sho areas of Barkin Ladi and Riyom LGAs, which have occurred despite the best efforts of security agencies to mediate conflicts arising from cattle or farm destruction.
Badaru condemned the actions of individuals disrupting farming activities during the crucial rainy season, stating, “The continuous recurrence of farmers/herders clashes across the federation is quite worrisome. Both farmers and cattle breeders need each other to survive.”
He urged the military and other security forces to remain vigilant and committed to restoring peace in Plateau State, emphasizing that the federal government will not relent until a sustainable solution is found.
