The Federal Government has initiated measures to mitigate the impacts of recent flooding in Borno State and assist affected residents.
Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, announced on Wednesday that experts and staff from various departments under the ministry have been dispatched to Borno to tackle post-flood challenges.
The response includes distributing 3,000 informational flyers to educate residents on flood management practices. Continuous water sampling and testing will be conducted to identify hazardous chemicals and prevent waterborne diseases. Additionally, 100 drums of chlorine will be used to disinfect water sources, ensuring safe drinking water and reducing the risk of diseases like cholera.
The Ministry will also distribute 30,000 flyers to promote best sanitation and hygiene practices, such as proper waste disposal and frequent handwashing, to curb the spread of infections.
Long-term plans include working with the Borno State Government to develop comprehensive flood mitigation strategies and early warning systems. The Federal Government will explore partnerships with international organizations to enhance disaster risk management and climate adaptation in the state.
Lawal commended Borno Governor Babagana Zulum for his prompt and effective response to the disaster. He expressed confidence that under Governor Zulum’s leadership, Borno will recover and strengthen its resilience against future environmental challenges.
The deployment includes experts from the Department of Pollution Control and Environmental Health (PCE&H), the Department of Erosion, Flood and Coastal Zone Management, the Department of Forestry, the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-arid Landscape Program (ACReSAL), the Nigeria Climate Adaptation-Erosion and Watershed Project (NCAEWP-EIB), the National Park Services, and the Environmental Health Council (EHCON).
