The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has launched investigations into nine organizations for data breaches. Dr. Vincent Olatunji, the National Commissioner of the commission, revealed this during a press interaction. While he did not disclose the names of the firms, he mentioned that they encompassed an insurance firm, a school, and a consulting firm.
Speaking about the commission’s independence, Olatunji emphasized that they operate autonomously in accordance with Section 7 of their act. He further highlighted the commission’s track record of impartiality, citing previous fines imposed on three major banks. Currently, the NDPC is actively investigating the data protection practices of the aforementioned nine organizations, demonstrating their commitment to upholding regulations regardless of political considerations.
Additionally, Olatunji mentioned the NDPC’s collaboration with the Central Bank of Nigeria regarding social media KYC (Know Your Customer) requirements. Following the announcement of the regulation, the commission corresponded with the apex bank, which in turn complied with the necessary procedures.
