The first ballots for the 2024 U.S. election were set to be distributed on Friday, marking the beginning of the electoral process for what is expected to be a close contest between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump. North Carolina, a key battleground state, will send out approximately 130,000 absentee ballots, with early in-person voting set to begin in some states by September 20.
Harris and Trump have been focusing their campaigns on crucial swing states like North Carolina, where the race is expected to be decided by narrow margins. Harris, who entered the race six weeks ago, has generated excitement among Democrats. Her campaign raised $361 million in August, significantly outpacing Trump’s fundraising efforts. This has energized her supporters as the race enters its final stretch.
Trump’s campaign, however, remains optimistic, citing strong support on key issues like the economy, immigration, and crime. His aides believe Harris’s early momentum will diminish as her policies come under closer scrutiny.
Polling data shows a tight race nationwide, with Harris leading Trump by 1.8 percent. However, in swing states like Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and Georgia, the contest is even closer, with Harris holding just a 0.2 percent edge — a virtual tie.
The first major event following the distribution of ballots is the scheduled debate between Harris and Trump, set for Tuesday on ABC News.
