Former Chief of Defense Staff, Lucky Irabor, has voiced his support for the closure of Banex Plaza in Abuja following a recent clash that occurred at the location. The Plaza, situated in the Wuse 2 area of Abuja, was shut down after traders engaged two soldiers in a fight.
Irabor emphasized that an attack on soldiers constitutes an attack on the state, asserting that any Nigerian of goodwill must condemn such acts. In an interview with Arise Television, he expressed his endorsement of the closure of Banex Plaza until those responsible for the incident are brought to justice. Irabor stressed the importance of holding perpetrators accountable to prevent the escalation of anarchy.
He commended the efforts of the policemen and other individuals who intervened to rescue the soldiers during the altercation, highlighting their crucial role in averting a potentially dire situation that could tarnish the nation’s image.
While acknowledging the media’s role in raising awareness about civic responsibilities and respect for security personnel, Irabor emphasized the importance of providing context when discussing such incidents. He underscored the need for public education on national security and individual responsibilities in safeguarding public institutions.
Responding to claims of the army’s silence on the matter, Irabor stated that it is the responsibility of the state to speak on behalf of the armed forces.
