Sifiso Dabengwa, the former CEO of MTN Group, passed away on Monday morning after a prolonged battle with cancer. Dabengwa, who was a prominent figure in the telecommunications industry, served as the CEO of MTN Group from March 2011 until 2015. His tenure was marked by significant challenges, including a record fine imposed by the Nigerian government.
Dabengwa, born in Zimbabwe, led MTN Group during a pivotal time in its history. He was at the helm when the company faced a massive N1.04 trillion fine from Nigeria for failing to disconnect over five million customers with unregistered SIM cards. The fine ultimately led to his resignation in 2015 as MTN sought to navigate the complex negotiations to resolve the issue.
Before his role as CEO of MTN Group, Dabengwa also served as the CEO of MTN Nigeria until 2006, further solidifying his influence within the company and the broader telecommunications industry.
South African media outlets have reported the news of his passing, citing confirmation from a family spokesperson, Themba Sibanyoni. In a statement, Sibanyoni described Dabengwa as a “titan in the telecommunications industry and an astute businessman.” He praised Dabengwa’s visionary leadership and the integrity and dedication that marked his tenure as CEO, contributing significantly to advancements in the industry.
Sibanyoni also highlighted Dabengwa’s legacy beyond the corporate world, noting his advocacy for education and his belief in the transformative power of technology.
At MTN’s headquarters in Johannesburg, South Africa, a top executive expressed the deep sorrow felt within the company, acknowledging that Dabengwa’s death was received with shock and a heavy heart. The executive noted that the entire MTN family is mourning the loss of a leader who played a crucial role in the company’s growth and success over the years.
Dabengwa had been battling cancer for some time but succumbed to the illness in the early hours of Monday. His passing marks the end of an era for MTN and the telecommunications industry, where his contributions will be remembered for years to come.
