Gift Monday, the Super Falcons forward, expressed her excitement after making her Women’s World Cup debut in Australia. Nigeria’s national team secured a spot in the Round of 16 after a goalless draw against the Republic of Ireland, making them the only African team to finish the group stage unbeaten.
The team’s journey started with a 0-0 draw against Canada, followed by a stunning 3-2 victory over co-hosts Australia, and culminated in the crucial stalemate against the Republic of Ireland. They finished second in the group with five points, just one point behind co-hosts Australia.
Gift Monday, aged 21, missed the first two games of the tournament but is now looking forward to making history with the former African champions. She expressed her joy at making her World Cup debut and stated that her aim is to go further in the tournament than any previous Nigerian team.
In her own words, “It is my first World Cup, so I need to make good use of it and make it memorable.” She also commended her teammates for their hard work and resilience, which contributed to the team’s qualification for the Round of 16.
Next, the Super Falcons will face Group D winners and European champions, England, in the round of 16, with the match scheduled for Monday morning in Brisbane.
