Tensions soared on Thursday at the Top Medical Junction in Minna, Niger State, as gunshots rang out while police intervened to prevent protesters from blocking a major road. The situation escalated when demonstrators, who had earlier been dispersed by teargas, attempted to set up a roadblock on the busy thoroughfare.
In response, police officers fired shots into the air to disperse the crowd. Meanwhile, police and vigilantes worked to clear stones used by protesters to block the road.
Security has been significantly bolstered in Minna, with personnel from the police, military, Nigeria Immigration Service, and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps deployed to key areas. This includes the Kpakungu Roundabout on Minna-Bida Road, a site of previous protests.
Markets and shops in the area were shuttered to prevent looting. The increased security measures are intended to curb any potential violence and safeguard local residents and businesses.
The state government and security agencies are closely monitoring the situation to ensure peace and order in Minna.
