The House of Representatives issued a warning on Monday to social media activist Martins Otse, known as VeryDarkMan, threatening to arrest him for refusing to cooperate during a committee investigation. This investigation focuses on bribery allegations against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), linked to crossdresser Idris Okuneye, also known as Bobrisky.
VeryDarkMan appeared before the lawmakers as summoned but declared he would not speak due to the absence of Bobrisky and the EFCC chairman. In response, committee members asserted that he cannot dictate their proceedings. They emphasized that since he was present, it was his responsibility to provide his testimony while they would determine how to address the absences of others.
The committee members reminded VeryDarkMan of their authority to compel attendance and even arrest him if he continued to refuse to cooperate. “You are not expected to dictate to us whether Bobrisky comes here or not; it is left to us to decide. We can also compel him to come before us. We can invoke our powers to arrest him,” stated the committee chairman.
The lawmakers stressed the importance of VeryDarkMan’s testimony, given the serious nature of the allegations he made, which prompted the committee to summon high-ranking officials. They urged him to proceed with his testimony, advising his lawyer to counsel him appropriately. “You must speak to the allegations you made. You are here already to testify. I will advise you to go ahead; don’t let anyone deceive you,” the chairman concluded.
