The Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission (ICPC) is currently investigating former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, on corruption and abuse of office allegations. This development was disclosed in a memo dated July 19, 2023, signed by the Petition Registrar, ICPC, H.S. Folaranmi, on behalf of the ICPC Chairman, Prof Bolaji Owasanoye.
The memo was a response to a petition filed by the Human and Environmental Development Agenda (HEDA) accusing Malami of corruption and high-handedness. The petition, submitted on July 10, 2023, and signed by HEDA Chairman, Olanrewaju Suraju, contained several allegations against Malami.
These allegations included distributing car gifts worth over N1 billion to supporters in Kebbi State, illegally auctioning off seized sea vessels with crude oil, violating the EFCC Act 2004, and duplicating payment of $16.9 million fees for the recovery of looted assets, among other claims. The group’s petition cited various news outlets as sources for the allegations against the former AGF.
