A human rights organization, Onurube, has urged Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun to intervene in the case of Mrs. Perpetua Oparaocha, who is currently detained by police in Imo State.
Oparaocha was taken into custody on September 13, 2024, from her shop in Umunachi village by individuals claiming to be officers from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID). The arrest is allegedly linked to a dispute over her late husband’s property.
Marjorie Ezihe, convener of Onurube, stated that Oparaocha’s detention stems from her refusal to withdraw support for her in-laws’ legal action regarding the property. The complainants reportedly offered her N10 million to abandon the case and sign a memorandum of understanding relinquishing her claim to the land. Oparaocha, citing her limited financial resources and the need for legal advice, declined the offer.
Onurube reports that Oparaocha’s family is currently engaged in a legal battle against the complainants, who are alleged to be attempting to intimidate her and claim the property in Anambra State. The organization is calling for the following actions:
1. **Release Oparaocha:** For medical reasons, given her ongoing hunger strike and pre-existing health issues.
2. **Ensure Safety:** Protect Oparaocha, her daughter, and both the Oparaocha and Nwagbo families from further threats.
The group is urging the IGP to act swiftly to address these concerns and secure Oparaocha’s release.
