Former Senate President Bukola Saraki has expressed his disappointment over the recent local government elections in Kwara State, where the All Progressives Congress (APC) secured all available positions. Saraki condemned the results announced by the Kwara State Independent Electoral Commission (KWSIEC), which declared APC candidates as winners in all 16 local government area chairmanship positions and all 193 councillorship seats.
In a statement posted on his X handle, Saraki lamented that the newly elected officials would assume their roles without legitimacy and a mandate from the people. He argued that the situation reflects poorly on the current government, which has been in power for 64 months without making a significant, positive impact on the lives of citizens.
Saraki pointed out that despite the evident lack of support from the electoral body, the people of Kwara made a concerted effort to mobilize themselves to the polling units during Saturday’s elections. Unfortunately, many were met with the absence of electoral officials and inadequate preparations, leading to widespread frustration.
He stated, “Last Saturday, in a manner that went beyond partisan consideration and gave expression to the protection of community interests, people from Kwara mobilised themselves to the polling units and met the absence of electoral officials and shoddy preparations by the electoral body.”
The former governor emphasized that regardless of the results declared, the electorate has sent a clear message to the government about its failure to address their needs. Saraki concluded by underscoring the shame of having chairmen and councillors in office who lack the people’s support and mandate.
