The recent decision by the British government to restrict foreign students, including Nigerians, from bringing dependents into the UK has sparked discussions and concerns among prospective international students. The policy change, announced earlier this year, now only permits international students enrolling in Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programs to bring their dependents to the country, a move aimed at addressing the strain on university resources caused by an influx of dependents.
As a result, many Nigerian Master’s students are exploring alternative destinations where they can pursue their studies while accommodating their dependents. Here is a list of eight countries that welcome Nigerian Master’s students with dependents:
1. Australia: Australian dependent visas allow family members of citizens, permanent residents, or eligible New Zealand citizens to live and work in the country, including spouses, children, and other eligible family members.
2. Estonia: Students studying in Estonia can apply for a family visa for their relatives to join them, allowing family members to accompany them in Estonia for up to one year.
3. Finland: Finland has seen an increase in issued residence permits, offering reduced visa processing times. The D visa allows immediate travel to Finland for family members of individuals applying for specific residence permits.
4. Canada: Canada’s immigration policies prioritize family reunification, allowing international students to bring their dependents who can also work or study full-time upon obtaining relevant permits.
5. Denmark: Denmark offers various dependent visa categories, including the Student Dependent Visa for spouses or unmarried children under 18 of foreign students studying in the country.
6. New Zealand: New Zealand’s dependent child student visa enables dependent children to join their parents in the country for primary or secondary school education, exempting them from tuition fees.
7. Germany: Germany’s family reunion visa allows spouses, children, and other family members to reunite and reside with their relatives in Germany, either temporarily or permanently.
8. Sweden: Sweden offers permits for individuals to relocate with their dependents, with the specific type of permit depending on the individual’s circumstances. Sweden is known for its quality of life and development indices, making it an attractive destination for Nigerian Master’s students with dependents.
These countries provide viable options for Nigerian Master’s students seeking to pursue their education abroad while maintaining family unity.J
