The Jigawa State government has revealed a significant investment of N500 million in the construction of improved latrines across schools, hospitals, markets, and motor parks within the state. Commissioner for Water Resources, Alhaji Ibrahim Hannungiwa, shared this information, underscoring the government’s proactive measures to maintain its ‘Open Defecation Free’ status. The state is dedicated to surpassing the national Open Defecation Free target by 2025, achieved through collaborative efforts with the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and UNICEF. Jigawa State, recognized as the first and only state declared Open Defecation Free in the country by UNICEF, is actively promoting sanitation awareness and providing standard public conveniences in public areas and along highways. Governor Umar Namadi, appointed as the ODF Ambassador by UNICEF, is slated to present Nigeria’s progress in the fight against open defecation at an international conference in Canada.”
