Senator Jimoh Ibrahim, representing Ondo South, has responded sharply to former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s recent comments, urging the former leader to refrain from undermining Nigeria’s progress. Ibrahim insisted that Nigeria is functioning well under President Bola Tinubu and the APC-led government, following Obasanjo’s keynote address at the Chinua Achebe Leadership Forum in Connecticut.
In his speech, Obasanjo criticized Nigeria’s leadership, suggesting the country was in a state of “state capture” and called for a more credible leadership in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Ibrahim, however, questioned Obasanjo’s grasp of the current administration’s challenges, noting that if Nigeria were truly a failed state, other nations like Ghana would be in an even worse situation.
Ibrahim highlighted reforms under Tinubu’s government, praising its efforts to improve the nation’s economy and foreign relations. He emphasized that Nigeria’s policies were independent of Western powers and noted the International Monetary Fund’s positive stance on Tinubu’s economic reforms. “Nigeria is working under this government,” he said, challenging Obasanjo’s negative assessment.
Ibrahim also criticized Obasanjo for not acknowledging security improvements under the current government, particularly regarding Boko Haram. He further rebuked Obasanjo for using inflammatory language, urging the former president to adopt a more constructive approach.
