Two sisters, Rebecca Simon, 24, and Tina Simon, 28, appeared in a Kaduna Chief Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday. They were charged with causing grievous harm to a shop owner over a dispute involving N300 change.
The prosecution counsel, Inspector Chidi Leo, informed the court that the sisters had visited the complainant, Felicia Samson’s shop on Oct. 7 to purchase a loaf of bread priced at N1200. They handed Samson N1500 but were informed there was no available change. Despite the shop owner’s plea for help in finding change, an argument quickly escalated.
In the course of the argument, Leo explained, the sisters allegedly attacked and seriously injured the shop owner. Nearby neighbors intervened, rushing Samson to the Sabon Tasha General Hospital for immediate treatment.
The prosecution noted that the assault violated Section 224 of the Kaduna State Penal Code of 2017, which carries a possible seven-year jail sentence if convicted.
Magistrate Ibrahim Emmanuel granted the defendants bail, each set at N100,000 with a surety in like sum. The case has been adjourned to Nov. 7 for hearing.
