The Kano State Government has voiced its apprehension following a bribery allegation brought to light by Justice Flora Ngozi Azinge, Chairperson of the Kano State National and State Houses of Assembly Election Petition Tribunal.
Justice Azinge had revealed that an attempt had been made to bribe a member of the tribunal with monetary inducements to influence the verdict in favor of a particular client. The incident was brought to light before a session in Kano on Tuesday.
Malam Baba Halilu Dantiye, the State Commissioner of Information, issued a statement in response to these allegations. The statement conveyed the government’s serious concern about the situation, particularly due to the prevailing rumor that influential individuals with a history of corruption were endeavoring to undermine the legitimate mandate of the people of Kano State.
Dantiye’s statement noted:
“The Kano State Government has taken notice of an assertion made by the Chairperson of the Kano National and State Houses of Assembly Election Petition Tribunal, Hon. Justice Flora Ngozi Azinge, regarding an attempt to offer money to a tribunal member to manipulate justice in favor of a certain party. According to her, ‘money has been flying in the Tribunal.'”
The government viewed this incident as a significant test for its present administration to demonstrate its commitment to combating corruption and upholding democratic principles. It called for a thorough investigation into the matter and the subsequent prosecution of any individuals found guilty. The statement also emphasized the need for relevant anti-corruption agencies to take swift action, particularly given that the allegation was made publicly by a respected judge.
While expressing its concerns, the government also acknowledged Justice Azinge’s actions as a commendable testament to the integrity still present within the Nigerian judiciary. The statement also appreciated the voters of Kano for their support of the NNPP (New Nigeria Peoples Party), demonstrating their dedication to defending their electoral mandate.
“The state government also thanks the good people of Kano that voted for the NNPP into power with well over one million votes at a time when it didn’t have federal, state, local government and financial resources. The government, therefore, notes and appreciates the readiness of Kano people to defend their mandate through whatever means possible,” Dantiye added.
The government’s response underscores its commitment to upholding the rule of law and preserving the integrity of the judiciary within Kano State.
