Lawal Pedro, SAN, the Lagos State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, has urged for urgent reforms in the administration of justice to enhance speed and efficiency in the judicial process. Speaking at the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Annual General Conference on Tuesday, Pedro highlighted the necessity of overhauling the current justice system to support economic development and investment in Lagos.
Pedro emphasized, “The way we administer justice must change. It’s no longer enough to provide access to justice; we must ensure that cases are resolved promptly, as justice delayed is justice denied.” He criticized the current pace of justice and set ambitious goals for the state, including resolving civil cases within two years and landlord-tenant disputes within six months. He believes these changes will foster a more favorable environment for investment and economic activity.
Pedro referenced the recent Justice Reform Summit as a significant milestone in this effort, describing it as an innovative event aimed at leveraging the justice system to drive economic growth, safeguard investments, and enhance security. “The summit was different from any other we’ve had in this region. It’s about administration of justice not just for justice’s sake, but for economic growth, investment protection, and security,” he said.
Addressing the issue of accountability in public services, Pedro used water rates as an example, advocating for a change in public attitudes toward paying for services. “Our justice system will play a role in changing that mindset, ensuring that economic activities thrive under the rule of law,” he explained.
Pedro also discussed the recent federal review of judicial officers’ salaries, noting that Lagos State has been a leader in this area. “Even before the federal review, our compensation structure for judicial officers was already above par compared to most other states,” he remarked. He hinted at upcoming benefits for magistrates in Lagos, promising new initiatives to improve their working conditions. “There’s something significant coming for our magistrates, and Mr. Governor will announce it in due time—likely within the next two to three months,” Pedro revealed.
The Lagos exhibition at the NBA conference, which aimed to highlight the city’s culture, technology, and legal innovation, was praised by Pedro. He expressed hope that visitors would gain a lasting impression of Lagos through the exhibition. “We want visitors to experience the affection and beauty of Lagos. Even if they can’t explore the entire city during their stay, this exhibition offers a glimpse of what Lagos has to offer,” he said.
The exhibition also featured publications and information from various state ministries, showcasing Lagos’s commitment to blending culture with legal and technological advancements.
