In a significant development during the ongoing ‘Exercise Clean Sweep’, the Nigerian army has unearthed 93 unexploded bombs in Lagos. The operation, which commenced on October 10, 2023, aims to decontaminate the area that was the epicenter of a bomb explosion in 2002.

The recovered bombs, varying in calibre and characteristics, were found despite previous clearance efforts. Colonel Abdulrazaq Kazeem, Director of the Directorate of Explosives Search and Disposal and Coordinator of Exercise Clean Sweep, provided updates on the operation’s progress. He emphasized the threats these unexploded ordnance remnants pose to the safety of residents and the surrounding environment.

Colonel Kazeem assured strict adherence to safety protocols, emphasizing that explosives would be moved to designated ranges once the maximum limits were reached. Lt Col Oluseyi Oladapo Bamikole, the Safety Officer, highlighted the stringent safety measures in place, ensuring the protection of personnel and proper identification of unexploded ordnance before recovery.
