The Lagos State Government has refuted claims circulating on social media that it plans to reintroduce the monthly environmental sanitation exercise, which would include restrictions on movement starting in July.
On Wednesday, Tokunbo Wahab, Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, clarified that the reports are false and intended to mislead residents. The statement was issued by Kunle Adeshina, Director of Public Affairs for the ministry.
Wahab emphasized that residents should disregard the viral fake news and continue their daily activities without concern for any movement restrictions on the last Saturday of July, as inaccurately stated in the false reports.
The commissioner explained that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had announced a new initiative for a weekly community-based sensitization and awareness exercise during a sanitation event at Campos playground on Lagos Island. This initiative aims to involve all residents in voluntarily cleaning their environment and spreading awareness.
“The governor also stated that state government officials will lead from the front every week by going around to join residents in voluntarily cleaning their environment while preaching the message,” Wahab said.
He further clarified that the governor did not announce the commencement of a monthly exercise or any movement restrictions for July or any future month.
Wahab urged all residents to adopt a continuous culture of maintaining cleanliness in their surroundings, rather than waiting for a government-declared sanitation day or movement restriction to engage in such activities.
