Tolu Bankole, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Working Committee, has called on governors to ensure the integration of individuals with disabilities (PWDs) into local government bodies to foster equality and combat discrimination.
In a statement released in Abuja on Friday, Bankole emphasized that this inclusion should start with the upcoming local government elections nationwide. He argued that integrating PWDs is crucial for enhancing democratic processes and governance frameworks in Nigeria.
Bankole stated, “I have no doubt that the leadership of governors in this matter can set a powerful example and contribute significantly to the realization of an inclusive and equitable political landscape in Nigeria. This will equally uphold the rights and dignity of Persons With Disabilities.”
He highlighted the Discrimination Against PWDs (Prohibition) Act, 2018, which provides a comprehensive framework for their protection and inclusion in all public life spheres, including political participation. Section 25 of the Act specifically mandates the right of PWDs to participate in political activities on an equal basis with others, prohibiting any form of discrimination against them in electoral processes and ensuring their right to vote and be voted for.
“I urge your Excellencies to take proactive steps to ensure that PWDs are not only included but actively encouraged to participate in the upcoming local government elections. This can be achieved through your overt support to PWD candidates, mentorship, and appointment into leadership positions,” Bankole added.
Additionally, the APC chieftain called on Nigerians to exercise caution during the scheduled nationwide demonstrations. While acknowledging the necessity of voicing complaints and seeking accountability, Bankole emphasized the importance of ensuring that public behavior does not turn into aggression or disorder.
“Peaceful and constructive dialogue remains the most effective way to bring about meaningful change,” he stated.
Bankole’s request follows a recent ruling by the Supreme Court affirming local governments’ right to directly receive monthly funds from the federal account. The court granted complete independence to the 774 local governments nationwide, as per the revised 1999 Constitution, deeming it unlawful and unconstitutional for state governors to keep or receive funds designated for local governments.
