Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has given the green light for the immediate recruitment of doctors, nurses, consultants, and other healthcare professionals in the state.
Following a meeting with the leadership of the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) in Ibadan, the state capital, Akin Fagbemi, Chairman of the Hospitals Management Board, announced the decision.
Fagbemi highlighted that the move was in response to the pressing issues raised by healthcare workers, particularly addressing the shortage of staff in hospitals and healthcare centers across the state.
He commended the governor for his commitment to transparency and accountability in the health sector, noting that such values are crucial for providing quality healthcare services.
The announcement comes after the state chapter of NANNM declared an indefinite strike on May 21, 2024, due to the non-response of the State Government to its eight-point request.
Fagbemi expressed appreciation for the governor’s proactive approach in addressing healthcare workers’ concerns, emphasizing the administration’s dedication to improving healthcare services in the state.
He pledged full support and cooperation with the Ministry of Health in implementing necessary changes and initiatives to benefit the residents of the state.
Additionally, Fagbemi assured union leaders that apart from the approved hazard allowance and ongoing recruitment exercise, other raised issues are being actively addressed, as revealed during the meeting.
