Manchester City midfielder Bernardo Silva has revealed that he does not consider his Portugal national teammate Cristiano Ronaldo as his football idol. Despite Ronaldo being the most decorated Portuguese footballer and a significant figure in the sport, Silva, in an interview with ESPN Argentina, named former Argentina international Pablo Aimar as his idol.
The 30-year-old Portuguese player shared that, as a young fan in Portugal, he was deeply inspired by Aimar’s playing style. “My idol? I liked watching Pablo Aimar when I was a kid… I really like him,” Silva stated.
This choice diverges from the common trend among many of Silva’s peers, who often cite either Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi as their football idols. When asked about his preference between the iconic Argentine clubs Boca Juniors and River Plate, Silva expressed a preference for River Plate, attributing it to his admiration for Aimar and fellow River Plate legend Javier Saviola.
“Boca or River? I don’t have a favourite, but my idol is Pablo Aimar, and I really like Saviola, so I like River Plate more,” Silva explained.
