Minister of Women Affairs, Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, has initiated legal proceedings against the Speaker of the Niger State House of Assembly, Abdulmalik Sarkin-Daji, to halt his plans to marry 100 girls.
Kennedy-Ohanenye disclosed to journalists in Abuja on Monday that she has also lodged a petition with the Inspector-General of Police regarding Sarkin-Daji’s proposed marriage project. She emphasized that a thorough investigation into the matter has been launched, with proceedings scheduled for May 24.
The Speaker of the Niger State House of Assembly had recently announced his intention to sponsor the wedding of 100 girls, some of whom were orphaned by insurgency, as part of his constituency project in Maringa.
Despite Sarkin-Daji’s clarification that he was merely providing financial support for the weddings and not compelling the girls into marriage, Kennedy-Ohanenye deemed the plan unacceptable, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing the girls’ futures.
She asserted that the Ministry of Women Affairs will take charge of the girls’ education and vocational training, ensuring that they have opportunities for empowerment and self-sufficiency.
Kennedy-Ohanenye warned the Speaker of the potential legal repercussions if he proceeds with his plans against the ministry’s objections, emphasizing the need to uphold the rights and well-being of the girls involved.
The minister’s actions underscore the government’s commitment to protecting the rights of vulnerable individuals and ensuring their access to education, empowerment, and opportunities for a better future.
