Abosede, the mother of the late Nigerian singer Mohbad, Ilerioluwa Aloba, has shed light on why her son chose not to disclose the alleged assaults and bullying he experienced from his former label boss, Naira Marley, and his associate, Sam Larry.
Mohbad, whose real name was Ilerioluwa Aloba, passed away on September 12, 2023, at the age of 27 and was laid to rest the following day. His death prompted a range of reactions in the entertainment industry and the general public, leading the Lagos State Government to initiate a coroner’s inquest into his demise.
During the Coroner’s Inquest on Wednesday, Mohbad’s mother revealed that her son was attempting to protect her from potential harm by Naira Marley and Sam Larry.
She explained that Mohbad lived in fear due to the alleged persistent harassment from his former record boss, and he was reluctant to let her speak with Naira Marley, fearing for her safety.
She stated, “He always mentioned Naira Marley and Sammy Larry, and he was always shaking. I begged him several times to allow me to speak with them, but he refused, saying he didn’t want them to kill me.
“The last time he traveled for a show, after he came back, he mentioned to me that Naira Marley came to attack him, he reported the case to the police but I don’t know if the police invited Naira Marley.”
In addition to Mohbad’s mother’s testimony, Mr. Aloba Joseph, the late singer’s father, also spoke about his son’s interactions with Naira Marley before his passing.
Testifying at the coroner’s court, Mr. Aloba acknowledged that his son had been living with Naira Marley since December 2019. He revealed that Mohbad had mentioned to him that he believed he could resolve any misunderstandings with the Marlian record label boss.
Mr. Aloba further testified that he and his son lived together for 18 years and claimed not to know the exact house in which his late son resided with Naira Marley until his death.
He stated that he last saw his son three days before his death and mentioned that he had only seen a picture of his son’s casket. Mr. Aloba also revealed that his late son’s property was in the custody of his mother-in-law and disclosed that Mohbad had talked to him about his possessions being held by his wife and her family.
