NFF Affirms Disbursement of Super Falcons’ Allowances

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) clarified to the House ad-hoc committee regarding the ongoing dispute between the Super Falcons and NFF, confirming the timely disbursement of match bonuses and allowances to the Super Falcons. NFF President, Ibrahim Gusau, conveyed this information in Abuja while responding to the committee’s summons.

Further discussions during the meeting delved into the issue of outstanding allowances for the Super Falcons during the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Gusau clarified that no funding was allocated for their participation in that tournament. However, he disclosed that during the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup hosted by Australia and New Zealand, $960,000 was provided to each of the 32 qualifying countries.

Gusau explained that FIFA allocated this preparation fund to help these nations prepare their teams for the tournament. He emphasized that these funds cannot be redirected to clear any pending allowances from the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

In response to queries posed by the Chairperson of the House ad-hoc committee, Hon. Blessing Onu, about the financing of the Super Falcons’ participation in the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup in France, Gusau’s explanation appeared to leave some doubts. Consequently, Hon. Onu ruled that the NFF must submit a comprehensive document detailing the funding of the Super Falcons during the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup. This document should encompass a breakdown of match bonus payments, documentation for 23 players, and the coaching staff. The submission deadline was set for August 30, 2023.

Based on the ad-hoc Committee’s findings on the NFF’s funding structure, the NFF President revealed that their primary sources of funding are the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and FIFA.

Expanding on this, the NFF elaborated that their operational funding does not originate from the federal government for its personnel; instead, they rely on CAF and FIFA. The NFF President highlighted that CAF provides an annual subvention fund of $250,000 to support their operations.
