Members of the Nigerian National Assembly, both the Senate and the House of Representatives, have started receiving their new 2023 model Toyota Land Cruisers. The vehicles are worth over N100 million each, and female lawmakers were given top priority in the distribution. A total of 109 Toyota Land Cruisers for senators and 2023 Toyota Prado vehicles for 360 House of Representatives members were planned for purchase by the National Assembly leadership. These vehicles are intended for lawmakers’ oversight functions and are considered operational vehicles tied to their duties. They will remain the property of the National Assembly for the duration of the 10th Assembly (2023-2027), and members have the option to purchase them at the end of the assembly’s tenure.
The move is seen as an effort to provide lawmakers with reliable off-road vehicles to reach remote locations in the country for oversight purposes. This allocation has been described as a means to maintain a respectable distance from the executive branch of government, emphasizing the importance of effective oversight and representing citizens’ needs.
