The Osun State Command of the Nigeria Police Force has issued a Public Service Announcement No.75/2023, appealing to residents of the state to voluntarily surrender any illegal firearms they possess at their nearest Divisional Police Headquarters. The announcement, signed by the Command’s spokesperson, SP Opalola Yemisi Olawo Yin, acting on behalf of the State Commissioner of Police, Faleye Olaleye, comes as part of the command’s proactive measures to combat the proliferation of prohibited firearms within the state.
This initiative aligns with the directives of the Inspector-General of Police, Ag. IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, PhD, NPM, aimed at fostering a peaceful society and upholding law and order across the nation. The Police High Command has emphasized the importance of curbing the unlawful possession of prohibited firearms, and the Osun State Police Command is wholeheartedly committed to this cause.
The announcement states, “In line with the instructions of the Inspector-General of Police and the efforts of the Police High Command to mitigate the proliferation of prohibited firearms in the state, the Osun State Police Command appeals to the general public to surrender any illegal firearms they may have at the nearest Divisional Police Headquarters.”
It’s crucial to note that those who surrender their firearms will not face any adverse consequences. The Police Command assures the public that no arrests or detentions will be made in connection with the voluntary surrender of such weapons.
The announcement concludes, “The Police Command wishes to clarify that there are no punitive measures associated with surrendering firearms. Therefore, members of the public are encouraged to visit their nearest Police Station and freely submit any illegal arms they possess.”
