The revelation by the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, that the Federal Government spent nearly 700 billion naira to subsidize electricity in 2023 has sparked reactions from Nigerians. Many are expressing their discontent with the substantial amount of money allocated to electricity subsidies and are urging the government to remove the subsidy in favor of providing prepaid meters.
Comments on Tribune online’s social media platforms revealed widespread displeasure among Nigerians regarding the electricity subsidy expenditure. Some users highlighted the need for transparency and accountability, questioning the effectiveness of the subsidy in improving power supply for the majority of the population.
One Facebook user, @Paul Olowasaiye, called for the removal of the subsidy and the distribution of prepaid meters to all citizens. Another user, @Saidu Salisu, criticized the privatization of the electricity sector, stating that the significant subsidy expenditure should be thoroughly investigated.
Expressing skepticism, @Adewunmi Isaac Opeyemi pointed out the irony of spending such a substantial amount on electricity subsidies while some government offices still rely on generators for power.
@Basiru Uba echoed the sentiment of subsidy removal, stating, “Remove it, we don’t die.”
On Twitter, @KabiruMisali advocated for the removal of electricity subsidies, comparing it to the situation with petroleum products. Another user lamented the lack of adequate electricity supply despite the hefty subsidy expenditure.
The collective sentiment from Nigerians is a call for transparency, accountability, and a reevaluation of the subsidy policy in the electricity sector. Many are urging the government to prioritize providing prepaid meters to citizens as an alternative to the current subsidy system.
