The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) has issued a flood alert, warning that Rivers Niger and Benue have reached critical “red mark” levels due to severe flooding affecting various parts of the country.
Director General Umar Mohammed urged both citizens and state governments to take immediate measures to mitigate the situation. He highlighted the urgent need for action, stating that rising water levels necessitate the clearing of drainage systems and gutters to facilitate water runoff and prevent further flooding. Prolonged rainfall across the nation has significantly contributed to the ongoing flash floods.
In a statement signed by the Director General, he reiterated NIHSA’s commitment to managing and developing the nation’s water resources. The agency will continue to monitor water levels in major rivers and tributaries, issuing timely flood warnings and predictions as needed.
“NIHSA is working proactively in collaboration with emergency response agencies and the media to protect lives and property, reduce flood impacts, enhance food security, and promote national resilience to flooding, thereby fostering sustainable water resource management,” Mohammed stated.
He also advised residents living along riverbanks to relocate to safer areas to safeguard their lives and property, emphasizing the critical nature of the current situation as water levels in Rivers Niger and Benue continue to rise.
