The Director General of Nigerian Metrological Agency, NiMet Prof. Mansur Bako Matazu has said the agency is ready to partner with civil society organizations in her effort to sensitize Nigerians on the importance of the agency to our daily lives. The DG said NiMET was one of Nigeria’s oldest agency founded in 1887 in Akassa in present day Bayelsa State and has achieved many giant strides within the last two years of his administration as Chief Executive Officer stating that he has tried as much as possible to bring NiMet into limelight and in full gear as several efforts in reaching all strata of society through simplified and user-friendly products and services as much as possible.
Prof. Matazu who disclosed this in his office when the Civil Society Groups for Good Governance (CSGGG) led by the President Comrade Ogakwu Dominic and his team paid him a familiarization visit.
Addressing the CSGGG leadership, Prof. Mansur said during the recent annual Seasonal Climate Forecast held in Abuja where all the farmers and user of forecast from the six geopolitical zone gathered, there was a lot of testimony on how NiMet forecast helped them save costs and Maximize profit.
In his word “From our statistical records around the impacts on our forecasts, especially on farming, farmers are beginning to experience improvements in yield by about 30 to 40 per cent”. It will be recalled that in 2022 the Central bank of Nigeria (CBN) heeding to the advisory services of NiMet on flood prediction in the country withdrew their intent in providing about N120bn loan support to farmers in the affected locations. Prof. Matazu assured the members of the Civil Society organization of his readiness to partner with them in other to take forecast prediction to the grassroots.
Speaking earlier, the President of CSGGG Comrade Ogakwu Dominic stated that the visit was a routine responsibility by the coalition to track performance of relevant MDAs as part of citizen action in promoting good governance. He further stated that the agency was critical to the nation’s advancement in several aspect especially as it bothers on agriculture, the economy and disaster management and also appreciated the agency efforts in ensuring that the mandate of the agency was fully operational under the able leadership of debonair and intellectually sagacious professor as Director General given his wealth of experience and broad understanding of the mandate of the agency.
Ogakwu further thanked the DG for his partnership disposition towards the CSOs as a lot of Nigerians don’t know what extent NiMet prediction affect their daily lives adding that such a collaboration is needed to bridge the gap in information sharing and grassroots sensitization.
