In a proactive move aimed at addressing the pressing issues of economic development and security challenges, the Northern States Governors’ Forum (NSGF) convened a crucial meeting in Kaduna on Tuesday, April 30. Led by Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, the chairman of the NSGF and Governor of Gombe State, the gathering saw governors and representatives from across the Northern region come together to chart a course for the region’s future.
Governor Yahaya emphasized the urgent need for economic revitalization and human capital development, highlighting the critical role of sustained economic growth in tackling insecurity. He pointed out that the Northern region faces significant challenges, particularly concerning the high number of out-of-school children, which poses a threat to the region’s stability.
The NSGF chairman stressed the importance of long-term solutions to these challenges, advocating for the revitalization of economic initiatives like the New Nigeria Development Company (NNDC) and strategic investments in critical infrastructure. Additionally, he called for a concerted effort to address environmental sustainability issues and promote regional integration.
In his address, Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani echoed the call for a comprehensive development plan, proposing a “Marshall Plan” for Northern Nigeria. He emphasized the need for collaboration among states to develop key sectors such as transportation, energy, agriculture, and solid minerals. Governor Sani also reiterated the importance of a unified approach to security, emphasizing the need for a common strategy and operational plan.
The meeting served as a platform for governors to exchange ideas, share progress, and reaffirm their commitment to addressing the region’s challenges. With a collective resolve to work together, the Northern governors expressed confidence in overcoming obstacles and achieving their shared vision for a prosperous and secure Northern Nigeria.
