Dr. Nze U. Nze, winner of the 2021 Nigeria National Award for Creative Writing in Indigenous Language, has advocated for the recognition and rewards of secondary students who represented Nigeria in an international debate competition. Dr. Nze, also a lecturer at Tansian University in Anambra State, expressed his viewpoint during an extracurricular activities program for Senior Secondary Schools held in Enugu.
Dr. Nze suggested that President Bola Tinubu and Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State, among others, should reward these students who brought pride to Nigeria. He highlighted that the achievements of the students, their teachers, and the schools they represent should be tangibly acknowledged by the Federal Government. He also recommended that Governor Soludo should consider rewarding them substantially, as the team hailed from Anambra State.
The students, competing as Team Anambra, secured victory in the national debate competition, earning the opportunity to represent Nigeria at the international level. They outperformed students from various countries, securing a trophy for their efforts.
Dr. Nze encouraged corporate organizations to consider rewarding the students as well. He suggested that these organizations could use the students as brand ambassadors for their products or services and compensate them through royalties. Such recognition not only incentivizes the current champions to continue excelling but also motivates other students to strive for excellence and participate in future competitions.
Drawing from his personal experiences, Dr. Nze emphasized how rewards and incentives during his academic journey significantly contributed to his achievements. He recalled receiving various tangible rewards for outstanding performances during educational competitions, which helped propel him to achieve higher academic pursuits.
In his call to action, Dr. Nze advised the Federal Government, Anambra State Government, and corporate entities to acknowledge and reward the achievements of Team Nigeria in the global debate competition. He emphasized that acknowledging the teachers and schools involved is equally important in fostering an environment that promotes excellence in education.
