Former U.S. President Barack Obama has voiced his strong support for Vice President Kamala Harris, declaring that she is ready to take on the role of President of the United States. Speaking at the Democratic Party’s nominating convention in Chicago on Tuesday, Obama received a warm welcome from the enthusiastic crowd, who erupted in applause as he praised Harris and took a firm stance against her November election opponent, Donald Trump.
“Kamala Harris is ready for the job. This is a person who has spent her life fighting for people who need a voice,” Obama stated, adding that Harris is someone who sees and hears the concerns of the American people and is committed to fighting for them daily. His endorsement of Harris, encapsulated in the phrase “Yes she can,” echoed his own iconic “Yes we can” slogan from his 2008 campaign, prompting the crowd to chant the phrase in unison.
Before Obama took the stage, former First Lady Michelle Obama also addressed the convention, expressing a sense of optimism and hope that she believes is returning to the country. Referring to Harris as “my girl,” Michelle Obama emphasized the resurgence of hope, a central theme of her husband’s successful campaign in 2008.
The convention was marked by a strong display of unity within the Democratic Party, with delegates symbolically nominating Harris as their candidate. Her candidacy has drawn significant support, with many believing she has the potential to defeat Trump in the upcoming election.
Harris, who is currently polling strongly, made her debut appearance at the convention via video link from Milwaukee, where she addressed both the Democratic and Republican National Convention crowds. Her ability to draw large audiences, in contrast to Trump’s recent events, has added to the momentum behind her campaign.
As Trump continues to criticize Harris, focusing on her alleged “anti-police” stance, the Democratic Party remains steadfast in their belief that Harris is the right candidate to lead the nation. The convention also saw President Joe Biden deliver an emotional farewell speech, as he passed the torch to Harris, acknowledging that while he loves the job of being president, his love for the country comes first.
Obama praised Biden for his service, calling him an “outstanding president” who has defended democracy during challenging times. With the party united and Harris firmly in the spotlight, the stage is set for a closely contested election.
