On Monday, Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, denied any plans to impeach his deputy, Philip Shaibu. Yet, he highlighted Shaibu’s recent legal action to prevent a supposed impeachment as a preemptive move, linked to an alleged plan to switch to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
During a meeting with Edo North leaders in Benin City, Obaseki accused Shaibu of negotiating his way into the APC at both the national and state level. He found Shaibu’s legal move shocking, given the latitude he was allowed in his role as Deputy Governor.
Obaseki stated that Shaibu never shared his ambition to be a governor with him, suggesting his recent actions were a calculated move to secure his position before shifting allegiance to another party.
Despite the rumors, no mention of impeachment was made in the state assembly on Monday. Instead, the assembly adjourned till the following Monday, August 14.
A group from Edo North, led by ex-Assembly Speaker, Kabiru Adjoto, accused Shaibu of embarrassing the region with his actions. Adjoto praised Governor Obaseki for his magnanimity and criticized Shaibu’s ambition to govern the state.
The deputy governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Musa Ebomhiana, was unavailable for comment due to medical leave.
