The electoral body declared the poll null and void on grounds that the pronouncement of the candidate of All Progressive Congress (APC), Aisha Dahiru Binani, as winner by the Adamawa State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Ari Hudu, when the process had not been concluded was an act impersonation of powers of the returning officer.
The REC Commissioner Ari Hudu, yesterday declared the APC candidate, Binani winner of the election in the absence of the returning officer of the Adamawa governorship election, Mele Lamido, who by law empowered to declare the winner of the election.
Infuriated by the action of the INEC REC, the members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) present at the collation centre in Yola got physical with Hudu.
In a viral video making round on social media, showed the INEC national Commissioner was stripped naked by unknown persons in Adamawa state.
INEC said it was deeply embarrassed by the harassment of our two national commissioners deployed to the state to ensure the smooth and credible running of the supplementary election.
Mortified by the ugly incident, INEC noted that the REC declared the result even when the process had not been concluded.
In a statement signed by the national commissioner, Information and Voter Education, Barr. Festus Okoye, suspended the election and summoned the REC, Returning Officer, and other involved parties.
