Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen is facing a challenging period during his time with Napoli, as his goal drought continued on Sunday, September 25, in a match against Bologna.
The 24-year-old Nigerian striker missed a crucial penalty opportunity in the 73rd minute, which could have secured a victory for his team. Unfortunately, Osimhen failed to capitalize on the chance, and the game ended in a disappointing 0-0 draw.
In addition to the missed penalty, Osimhen had another opportunity to put Napoli in the lead, but Bologna’s goalkeeper, Lukasz Skorupski, made a crucial fingertip save to deny his effort.
Adding to the drama, in the 86th minute, coach Rudi Garcia decided to substitute Victor Osimhen for Giovanni Simeone. This substitution left the Nigerian international visibly upset.
As Osimhen walked off the pitch towards the bench, he was seen engaged in a heated exchange with the coach, expressing his frustration at being substituted when Napoli still needed a goal. DAZN pitchside reporters reported that Osimhen was particularly vocal about the decision not to allow “two strikers” to work together rather than making the substitution.
Following the 0-0 draw, Napoli slid down to the 7th position on the league table with 8 points from 5 games, placing them 7 points behind the current league leaders, AC Milan.
Osimhen, who had an impressive record of 26 goals and five assists in Napoli’s Scudetto-winning season last year, has struggled to find the net in the last four games. Currently, he has scored three league goals in five league games this season.
