A Magistrate Court in Osogbo, Osun State, has sentenced Sunday Ejoh, an artisan specializing in aluminum work, to six months in correctional custody for stealing three tubers of yam.
Ejoh appeared in court on Monday, facing a charge of theft. According to police prosecutor ASP Jacob Akitunde, the theft occurred on Sunday, September 22, 2024, in Okinni, within the Egbedore local government area of Osun State. The three tubers of yam, valued at N3,000, belonged to a local resident named Olawole Durojaye. The offense violated section 390(9) of the Criminal Code Cap 34 Vol. II Law of Osun State, Nigeria, 2002.
In court, Ejoh, who did not have legal representation, pleaded guilty to the charge. He explained his actions by stating, “I am hungry, and I have a family,” highlighting his desperate circumstances.
During the investigation, police officials recovered a cutlass and slippers from Ejoh, among other items.
M.A. Olatunji, the presiding magistrate, sentenced Ejoh to six months in prison. However, the court provided an option for him to pay a fine of N25,000 in lieu of imprisonment.
