A pastor named Taiwo Odebiyi, based in Ogun State, reportedly set a 21-year-old woman named Sukura Owodunni ablaze during a deliverance session. The incident took place on August 17, 2023, at the Cherubim and Seraphim Maberu Parish in Offin, located in the Sagamu area of Ogun State.
Owodunni had visited the church in response to an invitation from the pastor for a special prayer session. During the session, she was instructed to purchase Amazing Grace perfume, local eggs, and a candle for the deliverance ritual. As per reports, the pastor poured the perfume on Owodunni’s body while praying for her and then lit the candle.
Shockingly, the woman’s clothing caught fire, resulting in severe burns to her chest, shoulders, and legs.
An eyewitness reported that the suspect was promptly apprehended by law enforcement officers led by CSP Abdulfattah Ogunsanya, the Divisional Police Officer in Adigbe.
Confirming the incident, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Omolola Odutola, stated that the victim was left to cover her own medical expenses. She mentioned that the suspect had been taken into custody, and a comprehensive investigation had been initiated to unravel the circumstances of the case.
SP Odutola remarked, “The lady was said to have been abandoned to fend for her medical bills after the incident. The victim has been taken to the hospital for medical attention. Our officers have arrested the suspect. The case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department once the preliminary investigation is completed.”
