The World Institute for Peace (WIP) has recommended the Federal Government to refrain from offering amnesty to terrorists and bandits, a response to recent calls for such amnesty by leaders of bandit groups in the North-Western states.
The statement was made by WIP Country Director, Lamina Omotoyosi, during the International Peace Conference on Sunday. Omotoyosi emphasized that the government should rather allocate more resources towards eradicating these threats from the country.
Omotoyosi stated, “The government should take a firm stand, disregarding public opinion, and do what’s necessary. It has to determine what’s right and enforce it. Recently, a former Zamfara governor, and some bandit kingpins from North-Western states, requested amnesty. But on what grounds? For what reason? It’s crucial that no amnesty is granted to these bandits.”
He added that the government should rely on the military’s capability to handle any security threat and continue to financially support military operations against terrorists.
The conference’s guest speaker, Ambassador Pradeep Sapkota, also added that the government needs to address the issue of hunger to truly combat insecurity.
