Residents of Kuka and Kwalla communities in Plateau State have appealed to President Bola Tinubu to intervene in the escalating herdsmen attacks and prolonged power outage. The two communities, along with others in Shendam, Quan-Pan, Mikang, Langtang North, Langtang South, and Wase local government areas, have suffered from a nine-year blackout. Despite numerous attempts to resolve the issue, their requests for assistance have gone unmet.
These concerns were presented to Mrs. Abiodun Essiet, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Community Engagement (North Central), during her visit to Shendam. The session aimed to engage local leaders and citizens from Plateau South Senatorial District.
Mrs. Essiet highlighted key issues raised by the communities, including persistent farmer-herder clashes in Kuka, recent kidnappings in Kwalla, and the ongoing power outage. The nine-year blackout, affecting several local governments, has severely impacted the local economy, education, and healthcare services. Small businesses are particularly struggling without reliable electricity.
Despite numerous pleas to electricity providers like Jos Electricity Distribution Company (JEDC), no resolution has been reached. Mrs. Essiet assured the communities that their concerns would be shared with the appropriate authorities to improve safety, rebuild trust, and foster economic growth in the region.
