Operatives of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command arrested a suspected kidnapper following a gun battle in the Kubwa area of Abuja. The incident occurred early on Friday when a gang of kidnappers invaded an estate, but were met by police officers who swiftly responded to a resident’s call for help.
Upon encountering the police, the kidnappers opened fire and fled into a nearby swamp. In pursuit, the police were able to apprehend one of the suspects and recover a vehicle belonging to the gang.
FCT Commissioner of Police, Tunji Disu, confirmed the arrest and revealed that weapons were seized from the suspect, including an AK-47 rifle with 20 live rounds of ammunition and a Beretta pistol loaded with 12 rounds.
Disu commended the swift action of a resident who reported the suspicious activity, emphasizing the importance of prompt reporting. “Luckily, one of them was arrested, others escaped,” Disu said. He urged residents to remain vigilant and quickly notify the authorities if they observe any suspicious behavior, adding that efforts are ongoing to capture the remaining kidnappers.
Disu stressed that timely intervention is crucial in such situations and thanked the individual who alerted the police, which enabled them to take swift action.
