The Polish students and their teacher detained in Kano State during the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protest have been released, according to recent updates.
The seven Polish nationals were arrested on August 6 amid escalating violence during the protest against poor governance. They were accused of displaying Russian flags during the demonstration.
Poland’s Foreign Minister, Radoslaw Sikorski, confirmed their release via his X (formerly Twitter) account on Wednesday. He reported that the Polish students and their teacher, who are studying African Studies at the University of Warsaw, are now free.
The group had arrived in Nigeria from Poland on August 1 and planned to return home in early September. Polish authorities criticized their detention, noting that the group was in Nigeria for academic purposes and had been in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Following their release, Sikorski assured that the group would be returning to Poland soon. He commented, “I would like to confirm that the young people are now free, back on campus in Kano, with their passports. They have had an accelerated lesson in African studies. I hope they will be back in Poland soon.”
